Explaining Digital Marketing Skills by Analogy to “Hunter X Hunter” Nen Types
I think that there are 6 typical skills in digital marketing — planning, data, system, design, administration, management. I will explain them by analogy to “Hunter X Hunter” Nen types.
(*)I think that I am a Data(Transmutation) near Planning(Enhancement), so I’m sorry that I may not correctly explain Administration(Manipulation) and Management(Specialization), at which I am poor.
6 Nen types
Planning(Enhancement)
It is good at planning measures, scenarios, A/B testing, and enhancing KPIs such as PV, CTR, CV.
And It is also good at Data(Transmutation) and Design(Emission) because it sometimes analyzes data and plans creative products such as advertisement, LP, Email. Enhancement is the strongest Nen type in terms of a marketing player.(In “Hunter X Hunter”, Enhancement is called the strongest type in terms of hand-to hand battle.)
On the other hand, it is NOT always strong in terms of a marketing manager, so it is poor at Administration(Manipulation) and Management(Specialization) such as stakeholder management, office politics, business management.
And it is also poor at System(Conjuration) such as engineering, programming because it doesn’t have much experience.
Data(Transmutation)
It is good at selecting KPI from measures and scenarios. It is also good at Planning(Enhancement) and System(Conjuration) because it sometimes plans measures on the basis of data, and reads source code.
On the other hand, it is poor at Administration(Manipulation) because stakeholder management, office politics is NOT always on the basis of data(It is always on the basis of human feelings, factional power politics).
And it is poor at Design(Emission) because Design requires not only data but also feelings or senses.
If Transmutation and Enhancement work together, they are strong in terms of marketing players. They can make up for their weakness each other because Enhancement is good at Design, and Data is good at System.
But they are both poor at Administration, so they are sometimes opposed to company administrators, managers. (e.g.)In “Chimera Ant arc”, Gon and Killua helped people out of “Selection”on their own judgement. As a result, it was successful because Morel, who was their boss, agreed with their judgement…
System(Conjuration)
It is good at designing and developing systems. It is also good at Data(Transmutation) in terms of constructing data infrastructure such as DMP, Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager.
Conjuration has few strong Nen type because Conjuration is next to Specialization(Management). Even if it trains only Conjuration such as coding quickly and being good at programming languages, it will have lack of digital marketing skill. Even if it trains Data, it is difficult to compete with Data who is good at Conjuration.
So it is important for Conjuration what to “conjure”. It may be good idea to make a specialized field such as Salesforce, Tableau, Google. (e.g.)Kurapika has acquired a specialized skill “Chain Jail” to beat down Phantom Troupe.
Or it may be good idea to make a thing which is difficult for many people to make, such as service prototype. (e.g.)Nov can make “Fourth-Dimensional Mansion”, which is difficult for many Conjuration to make.
Design(Emission)
It is good at designing creative products such as advertisement, Website, Email, LP. It is also good at Planning(Enhancement) and Administration(Manipulation) because it sometimes designs customer journey and scenarios, and orders designers and developers as a director.
On the other hand, it is poor at System(Conjuration) because it doesn’t have much experience of reading source code, developing systems. And it is poor Data(Transmutation) because it doesn’t have much experience of analyzing data.
Design(Emission) will be active when it designs a large scale, and complex creative products. Surely it is possible for Planning to design a simple creative product such as change a color of button in A/B testing, change a catchphrase of LP, but it is impossible to design a large scale, and complex creative products such as renewing UI/UX, renewing LP.
And it is better at Administration than Planning, so it can handle stakeholder management, office politics. (e.g.)In “Hunter X Hunter”, Leorio and Senritsu(Melody) stop Gon and Kurapika to run out of control.
But it is poor at Data and System, so it sometimes tends to be negligent on designing analyzation and operation after producing. Please don’t leave everything to Emission and follow Emission.
Administration(Manipulation)
It is good at requirement definition, stakeholder management etc. it is also good at Design(Emission) because it sometimes orders designers and developers as producer or director. it sometimes changes to Management(Speciallist) such as CEO, CMO, CDO.
On the other hand, Administration is poor at Planning(Enhancement) because it doesn’t have much experience of planning measures, scenarios, A/B testing. And it is also poor at Data(Transmutation) because it tends to be conscious of human feelings, factional power politics.
Administration has few strong Nen type because Administration is next to Specialization(Management). Even if it trains only Administration, it will become a person who does nothing more than setting up a meeting or order others. Even if it trains Emission, it is difficult to compete with Emission who is good at Administration.
So it is important for Administration to train team building. (e.g.)In “York Shin City arc”, Shalnark pulled Phantom Troupe together after Kurapika had caught Chrollo. Administration will be active in the organization.
Management(Specialization)
(*)I use “management” as a company management such as CEO, CMO, CDO, entrepreneur etc.
In my personal opinion, Management is Specialist so everyone doesn’t necessarily become Management. Surely it is possible for everyone to start a business, but few people get results as Management.
(*)some people say that marketers should become a manager in social media, but I don’t believe it.
Many successful managers have not only effort but also strong mission or vision for society because they have a formative experience when young. (e.g.)They have wanted to change the world through experience when childhood. If you have the formative experience, you may become Management.
I have no experience so don’t have strong mission or vision for society.(I have become a freelance because I have wanted to come back to Oita prefecture, which is my hometown.) So I have no idea how to train Management.
Training own Nen type, and Nen types next to it
If you train ONE Nen type, you will have poor applicability. (e.g.)Uvogin trained only Enhancement, so he couldn’t overcome “Chain Jail” by Kurapika.
On the other hand, if you train all Nen types, you will have no strong points. (e.g.)Kastro trained Emission and Conjuration and Administration, so he couldn’t train Enhancer: Hisoka called it “Memory Overload”.
As Biscuit advised to Gon and Killua, it is important to train own Nen type, and Nen types next to it. Let’s try!
